Shane Bieber's Contract Choice: A Puzzle for the Pros
It's a head-scratcher that has baseball analysts buzzing: Why did Toronto Blue Jays' starting pitcher Shane Bieber opt to accept his $16 million player option for the 2026 season?
Let's break this down. After a strong performance in 2025, Bieber likely could have commanded a much larger annual average value (AAV) on a new contract if he had opted out. Plus, he would have received a $4 million buyout. Instead of potentially securing a deal worth $20 million or more (and possibly a multi-year contract) on the open market, Bieber chose to stay with the Jays for one more season, guaranteeing himself just $16 million with no further financial security.
This decision has left many in the baseball world scratching their heads. As Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic pointed out on a recent episode of Foul Territory, the surprise was palpable. "I was surprised," Rosenthal stated. "People with the Blue Jays were surprised. People in the industry were surprised, and you just don’t see this kind of decision very often."
Rosenthal further elaborated, suggesting that Bieber could have potentially secured a deal in free agency worth around three years for $50 million, or even more.
But here's where it gets controversial... Why would Bieber make such a choice? Rosenthal offered a few possible explanations. Perhaps Bieber values the Blue Jays' medical staff and the comfort of his current situation, especially considering he's only about 18 months removed from Tommy John surgery.
Rosenthal also mentioned that an extension wasn't part of the deal. "My initial thought also was, well, okay, perhaps an extension is coming,” Rosenthal said. “But my understanding is that there is no extension as part of this. It really hasn’t even been discussed. It has not been a motivator for him in making this decision. … I don’t exactly know what Shane Bieber was thinking.”
